Moving Beyond
For decades the moving and relocation industry has been operating with handwritten inventories. However, these have several limitations:
- Poor legibility: hard-to-read handwriting, fading/smudged pen or pencil, stained/damaged paper.
- Difficult for customers to understand location and condition codes
- Shareability isn’t efficient- creating photocopies, waiting for the driver to return with paperwork, and tracking down physical copies of paperwork.
- Costly- the risk of losing paperwork is a nuisance for an insurance claim, and it costs time to print and prepare paperwork.
Benefits of Digitizing Inventories
Electronic inventories can address the limitations of handwritten records. Now there is a demand from both moving customers and their clients to transition to electronic paperwork. The United States Transportation Command (USTRANSCOM) is one of the largest customers of moving services in the world. It is a strong example of a customer pushing for this change. In their 2022 Defense Personal Property Program (DP3) HHG Tender of Services, they have proposed a mandate for all inventories to be electronic from 15 May 2023.
